Overview
In-Core Systems
Mirion Technologies Sensing Systems Division offers a variety of in-core sensors, including fixed and movable detectors, self-powered detectors and local power range monitors for all types of nuclear reactors. In addition we also supply radiation-resistant cables and a wide range of accessories.
Nuclear facilities around the world specify our In-Core Sensors for safety and reliability.
All of the Sensing Systems Division In-Core Sensors are constructed of inorganic materials throughout to withstand the extreme environments of the power reactor core. Typical construction materials for the sensor and integral cable include stainless or inconel metallic sheaths with alumina or magnesia insulation.
All self-powered detectors employ the most durable single-sheath construction design. Other in-core detector types by the Sensing Systems Division are joined using the latest laser beam welding and brazing technology. Critical welds and brazes are non-destructively tested with state-of-the-art equipment. All fixed and movable detectors are calibrated for radiation sensitivity to ensure that they meet or exceed acceptance criteria demanded by our customers.
Our in-house, quality assurance and control program is a continuous, all-encompassing effort. From a computerized tracking system rating our materials' vendors, to our rigorous inspection and testing procedures, insures that adherence to our total quality system is well-documented.
The Sensing Systems Division supplies a full-line of In-Core Systems, including:
- In-Core Sensors
- Cabling
- Electronics
Out-of-Core Systems
The Sensing Systems Division supplies a full line of out-of-core radiation sensors for all types of reactors. Sensors include proportional counters, compensated and uncompensated ionization chambers, power range assemblies, fission counters and chambers along with cables, connectors and assemblies.
Sensing Systems Out-of-Core Sensors have a worldwide reputation for outstanding reliability, accuracy and durability.
To withstand the extreme radiation and temperature environments encountered in a nuclear power plant, IST Out-of-Core Sensors are constructed entirely of inorganic materials. Whenever possible, materials are selected to minimize activation and, thus, to facilitate handling of radioactive sensors.
Out-of-Core Sensors by are produced in a carefully controlled manufacturing facility. Each sensor is followed through its assembly process step by step to verify that production and design specifications are being met. All welds are non-destructively tested, and the specified limits of each sensor's radiation sensitivity are verified by our calibrated neutron and gamma testing facilities.
Our in-house, quality assurance and control program is a continuous, all-encompassing effort. From a computerized tracking system rating our materials vendors, to our rigorous inspection and testing procedures, IST insures that adherence to our total quality system is thoroughly documented, regarding all plant activities.
The Sensing Systems Division supplies a full-line of In-Core Systems, including:
- Out-of-Core Sensors
- Cabling
- Electronics

Electrical Penetration Assemblies
The Sensing Systems Division penetrations are modular in design and manufactured to operate reliably over the design life of a reactor. They safely pass electrical circuits through the reactor containment vessel wall while maintaining its integrity.
Sensing Systems Electrical Penetration Assemblies (EPAs) are modular in design and manufactured to operate reliably over the sixty year design life of a reactor. Over 15,000 of our Electrical Penetrations with over 200,000 operating years experience are providing trouble-free performance in over 280 nuclear power plants throughout the world.
The Electrical Penetrations safely pass electrical circuits and optical fibers through the reactor containment vessel wall while maintaining its integrity. The EPAs are fully qualified to the latest nuclear industry standards including IEEE, IEC, RCC-E and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. They comply with worldwide nuclear regulatory requirements under quality systems that meet NQA-1, ISO-9001 and 10 CFR 50 Appendix B.
The Sensing Systems Division offers the following assemblies:
- IST-Conax Nuclear Electrical Penetrations
- IST-Auxitrol Electrical Penetrations
